Who We Are

Masters ski racing is the premier adult ski racing series in the country, governed by United States Ski & Snowboard competition rules, the sanctioning body in the US for organized ski racing at all levels from juniors up through international and Olympic competition.

Far West Masters organizes US alpine masters competition in the Far West division. Our yearly schedule includes all disciplines (SL, GS, SG, and DH), with races held mainly at ski areas in the central Sierras for any racers over the age of 18.

For adult, NASTAR, club racers, and good skiers in general, Masters ski racing provides challenging competition within an atmosphere of fun and camaraderie. We welcome racers of all levels - from beginners who enjoy exciting race courses, to former Olympians, U.S. Team Members and everyone in between.

What is Far West Masters?

Far West Masters is an all-volunteer organization that organizes alpine masters ski competitions in the Far West division, which consists of California, Nevada, and Arizona. We are an open, volunteer group and welcome all who wish to participate.

Our races take place primarily at ski areas in the Sierra, from Lake Tahoe in the north to Mammoth Mountain in the central Sierras. Our yearly schedule includes slalom (SL), giant slalom (GS), super giant slalom (SG), and downhill (DH) races.

Each year, the US Alpine Masters hold Eastern and Western Regional Championships in addition to the National Masters Championship. In addition to US events, some masters athletes compete internationally in the FIS Masters Cup series throughout Europe, North and South America.

Several resorts host camps and provide training opportunities throughout the season, you can find out more on the Training Opportunities page.

Who Can Join?

We welcome racers of all ability levels. While the competition can be intense and the courses challenging, camaraderie and fun are an integral part of the program. We hold awards parties on most race weekends, which are great opportunities to get to know your fellow racers.

Racers range in age from 18 to over 90 years old, and run in five-year age groups following a standard age-group start order at each race. Older age groups run before younger age groups; when it comes to Masters racing being old has its perks!

Racers must have a U.S. Ski & Snowboard masters membership or may purchase a short-term masters membership valid for one race day. Far West Masters membership is required if you race more than one weekend - membership entitles you to a permanently-assigned stretch bib, along with our newsletter, email updates of news during the season, eligibility for season awards, and access to members-only features on this web site. Visit the How to Join page for details on racing with us.
