Far West Masters - Age Classes Summary

Far West Masters run in 5-year age classes for masters competitors age 18 and up. A special Open class is formed from the fastest racers across all age groups. Racers under 21 are welcomed, but compete in separate classes and are not eligible for awards or the Open class.

First run start order: random draw within age class. Second run start order: slowest-to-fastest within age class by first run time. Racers who were DNF or DSQ on the first run may take a second run starting at the end of their class, after qualified competitors.

Open classes are formed for the second run of GS/SL technical events from the overall fastest 5 women and 10 men from the first run and start after the 50's classes (between class 6 and 5). Racers may elect not to compete in Open class if they wish to remain in their age class; if so, their slot goes unused and Open class size is reduced accordingly. For speed events (SG and DH), Open class is awarded based on the overall fastest 5 women and 10 men from the race run; as with technical events, competitors may "opt out" to remain in their age class for race awards and season scoring.

IMPORTANT: Split Second Timing (SST) coding conventions:

For start list generation, sort the competitors by random draw within age class for the first run. For the second run, start order is in descending order of first-run time (slowest to fastest) within age class. SUbject to jury confirmation, first-run DNF and DSQ competitors are allowed to take a second run at the end of their age class. The built-in Split Second sort for Running Order by Class for masters provides the correct age class order, with the exception of second run Open class which must be manually moved into position to run between class 6 and 5.

Bib Numbers

Current members of the Far West masters have permanent stretch bibs assigned to them that they wear at all races. Their bib number is provided when they send their race registration entries. New racers, competitors from other divisions, or racers competing under a USSA weekend temporary license are given a temporary paper bib for the race, with numbers assigned starting from 900.

At the end of each season, the top 5 women and the top 10 men in the overall season standings are awarded special colored leader bibs to wear througout the following season. The leader bibs are colored blue and numbered 1-10 for the top 10 men, while the top 5 women wear yellow bibs numbered 1-5. All other racers wear the standard white Far West bib with numbers starting at 20.

In order to have unique bib numbers in the timing system computer and on the hill, the leader bibs are encoded in the timing system data with the bib number followed by a letter indicating the color - B for men, Y for women (i.e., 1B, 2B, ... 10B for the top 10 men; 1Y, 2Y, ... 5Y for the top 5 women).
